Walking Good

The possibilities for your new floor color may be limited by the type of wood the floor is made of. Lighter materials -- oak, pine and maple, for example -- give you a broader palette with which to work than dark hardwoods like mahogany and walnut. If the wood is already stained, you must sand the floor to remove the stain if you want to lighten it or restore its natural color. Although you can darken the color by applying a glaze, it's important to keep in mind that the new color will be a combination of the existing and glaze colors.
